چکیده

The evolutional course of music through centuries has shown an incremental use of chromatic variations by composers and performers for melodies’ and music sounds’ enrichment. This paper presents an integrated model, which contributes to the calculation of musical chromaticism. The model takes into account both horizontal (melody) and vertical chromaticism (harmony). The proposed perceptually based measures deal with music attributes that relate to the audience’s chromatic perception. They namely are: the musical scale, the melodic progress, the chromatic intervals, the rapidity of melody, the direction of melody, music loudness, and harmonic relations. This theoretical framework can lead to semantic music visualizations that reveal music parts of emotional tension. Key-Words: -chromaticism, harmonic relations, emotional tension, perception of music chroma, chromatic index, chromatic intervals, music visualization

A Quantitative Study of Chromaticism: Changes Observed in Historical Eras and Individual Composers

Music historians have observed informally that Western music became increasingly chromatic between roughly 1600 and 1900. This view is tested formally, and the results are shown to be consistent with the standard view. Music historians have similarly assumed that the music of major composers such as Mozart and Beethoven became increasingly chromatic over their respective lifetimes. Measurements...

A Synopsis of Sound - Image Transforms based on the Chromaticism of Music

Numerous algorithms have been proposed for image to sound and sound to image transforms. Based on heuristic assignments of sound frequencies to RGB values, they perform effective mappings between musical entities (notes) and values for optical wavelengths. In this paper, the chromaticism of the sound domain is taken into account and the coloring of the performed music is depicted for interrelat...

Revealing the Hidden Motives of Chromaticism in Music through Computational Semantic Visualizations

State-of-the-art ways for visualizing high-level music concepts are currently a trend in music computing, aiming at bridging the semantic gap between music information retrieval and human knowledge. This work presents the analysis of Brahms’s String Quartet Op.51 No.1 concerning the concept of chromaticism by using the chromatic index (a chroma measure especially designed for calculating chroma...

Converting Images to Music Using Their Colour Properties

Music is associated to colors since ancient years. Different mappings between attributes of sound and images allow the efficient conversion between the two types of media. The proposed method for converting images to music using the concept of chromaticism provides the area of computer music with a parameterized environment for audio-visual presentations. The auditory display of colour images m...
